Greg Coon and Delaware Track Crew Work To Make Racing Good To Go For Today

DELAWARE, OH - "We should be good to go this afternoon," says track consultant Geg Coon, following an all night rain which covered the Delaware County Fair's world famous half-mile track.

"At nine o'clock this morning we put a couple of rubber blades on two graders and wiped the juice to the outside of the track.  We then put some fresh material across the track where the horses race.  The entire track is now covered with a fine stone chip.  This allows the horses to get a hold of the track.

"The material we use is very similar to the old days when people would paint their front steps and before the paint dried they would scatter sand on the paint to keep from slipping."

Coon, who came to Delaware in 1991, supervised the reclaying of the track six years ago.  Coon also drives the starting gate for all of the races.
