Western Silk and Mark MacDonald beat a final field of 8 and the rain to capture the $353,400 Jugette in straight heats on Wednesday at the Delaware County Fair.

At the start of the $169,632 second heat, Yannick Gingras rushed Rock N Soul out of the two hole to take the early lead. Ron Pierce guided Full Picture from the outside eight post and found a spot behind Rock N Soul past the quarter in :28 4/5. Western Silk started the outside flow past the half in :57 4/5. The eventual winner stuck a nose in front before the three quarters in 1:25 3/5. Western Silk held off a late charge by Dancinwiththestarz (Brian Sears) and Seriously (Jody Jamieson) to score a ¾ length victory in 1:53 1/5. As the field crossed the finish line, the threatening sky produced the anticipated rain shower.

The Western Terror lass is trained by co-owner Casie Coleman and Tom Hill of Lancashire, Great Britian.

“This is pretty sweet,” noted the trainer who scored her first Jugette crown. “She proved her ability today. We’ll go next to the Breeders Crown.”

As the gates wings folded for the second elimination, Native Doll (Brett Miller) made a break in stride and bumped into Dance Until Dawn (Douglas McNair) and Western Silk causing some concern for their connections. Dancin Barefoot (Daniel Dube) took advantage of the miscue and led the field through the first half of a mile in :56 1/5. Dance Until Dawn took a brief lead at the three quarter mile station until MacDonald sent Western Silk wide around the final turn and surged past Dancin Barefoot by 2 lengths in 1:52 1/5. Dance Until Dawn and Full Picture completed the top four and advanced to the final.

In the first elimination, Dancinwiththestarz and A And G’s Princess (George Brennan) made breaks in the first turn giving the lead and eventual victory to Rock N Soul. Rock N Soul controlled the fractions of :27 2/5, :56 and 1:24 1/5. The Rocknroll Hanover filly used a :27 4/5 last quarter to score by a head over Seriously in 1:52. Dancinwiththestarz and Berschet (Sam Noble IIl) advanced to the final.

The first place check of $172,458 pushes her career earnings to over $1 million.
