Walsh and Delaware County Fair Officials Establish $100,000-Est. Magical Mike Pace Starting In 2002 October 31st, 2001
Delaware, Ohio--Beginning in 2002 the Magical Mike Pace
will be
resurrected at the Delaware, Ohio County Fair for an estimated purse of
$100,000. Thomas J. Walsh, Jr., an owner of Magical Mike, made the
announcement with Delaware fair officials after the parties reached a
three-year agreement for the race.
Walsh and Delaware Fair officials also announced that
$65,000 will be
added to the early closing event for 4-year-old and older pacers. In
addition, the race has been scheduled for Jug Day, Thursday, September 19,
2002. If necessary, eliminations will be held on opening day, Saturday,
September 14. The Magical Mike had been raced during the Delaware Grand
Circuit from 1995 through 2000 as an invitational pace.
"We really want to show off the older pacers at Delaware,
and we're
hopeful this will help us accomplish that goal," said Phil Terry,
Delaware's
marketing director.
Little Brown Jug champion Magical Mike, who stands at Blue
Chip Farms in
New York, is the sire of Gallo Blue Chip, p, 4, 1:48.4, the richest pacer in
history with earnings of $3,704,111.
Two and three-year-old World Champion Magical Mike is also
the sire of 60
in 1:55, 186 in 2:00 and the winners of $14,876,696.
Magical Mike is the only two-year-old to win both the
Woodrow Wilson and
Governor's Cup and earned "Two-Year-Old Pacer of the Year" honors in
1993.
At three the son of Tyler B won the Breeders Crown and the Holmes Memorial in
addition to the Little Brown Jug.
A $300 nomination fee will be due February 15, 2002 with
sustaining
payments of $300 due April 15 and $500 on May 15. The starting fee is $750.
