Little Brown Jug To Be Part Of $1,000,000 Grand Slam Bonus For 2001 Harness Season
February 4, 2001 Six of harness racing's leading stake sponsors, including the Little Brown Jug Society, have created a $1,000,000 bonus for the three-year-old pacer or trotter who wins four of the sport's elite races in 2001. A pacer that wins the Little Brown Jug (Delaware, Ohio), North America Cup (Woodbine), Meadowlands Pace (The Meadowlands) and their division of the Breeders Crown (Woodbine) will earn $1,000,000 and won't even be asked for their final answer. Also, any trotter who can take the Hambletonian (The Meadowlands), World Trotting Derby (Du Quoin, IL), Kentucky Futurity (The Red Mile) and their division of the Breeders Crown (Woodbine) is also in for a cool $1,000,000 payday. Should both a pacer and a trotter accomplish a Grand Slam in a single year, the connections of each would receive a $1 million prize. All races are at one mile. The Little Brown jug will be raced for the 56th time on Thursday afternoon, September 20th at the Delaware, Ohio County Fair and will be the third leg of the Grand Slam. Delaware's 2001 Grand Circuit meeting has been expanded to six days. The Grand Circuit will open on Saturday, September 15th and continue through Thursday, September 20th. The Grand Slam of Pacing and Trotting is sponsored by the Little Brown Jug Society, Hambletonian Society, The Red Mile, Illinois Department of Agriculture, Meadowlands Racetrack and the Ontario Jockey Club. The bonus policy is underwritten by Royal Sunalliance with Powell-Walton-Milward of Lexington, KY. It is the largest bonus ever offered in the sport as a cash prize, which would be added immediately to the horse's earnings.
