George Sholty Named Neville Award Recipient For 2001

George Sholty, Hall of Famer and winner of over $20 million in purse money, has been selected as the third recipient of the Joseph Neville Memorial Award to be presented at the Mayor's Breakfast on September 19, 2001.

Sholty was chosen by a 22-member panel of national and international harness racing enthusiasts.

During his nearly 50-year career, the Logansport, Indiana native won 2,934 races and $20,777,666 in purse money. Sholty won the 1966 Pacing Triple Crown with Romeo Hanover and trained the 1992 Little Brown Jug champion, Fake Left, who stunned to racing world by spoiling Western Hanover's Triple Crown bid by a scant nose.

Sholty captured the 1979 Hambletonian with Legend Hanover, the 1979 Meadowlands Pace with Sonsam and guided Express Ride, Confer and Armbro Fling to Breeders Crown titles.

George Sholty was inducted into the Harness Racing Living Hall Of Fame in Goshen, New York in 1984. Sholty passed away in December of 2000 at the age of 68.

Sholty's family will be presented a plaque at the Little Brown Jug Mayor's Breakfast at Ohio Wesleyan University on September 19, the morning before the 56th Little Brown Jug at the Delaware County Fairgrounds.
