Delaware Gazette Editor May 18, 2001 A 35-year-old Powell resident who says he "appreciates the family fun atmosphere of a county fair" is the new manager of the Delaware County Fair. Robert L. Reed, director of corporate sponsorship and advertising for the United States Trotting Association, will succeed Bill Lowe in June. Fair board President W. D. "Chip" Thomson said Reed was selected on a majority vote of the board Tuesday from a field of 12 applicants, six of whom were interviewed. "I'm extremely excited about our choice," Thomson said of Reed. "The personnel committee did a bang-up job. We've got a qualified person to succeed Bill Lowe as fair manager." Reed will begin work early in June, allowing him time to overlap with Lowe before Lowe leaves on July 6. "Basically, I would like to thank the Delaware County Fair Board for the wonderful opportunity that has been presented to me and my family," Reed said in a telephone interview with The Delaware Gazette Wednesday afternoon. His family includes wife Melinda and two sons, Austin, 3 1/2 and Jack, 8 months. Reed, a graduate of Ohio State University, has been with the United States Trotting Association since late 1995. Before that he served as director of group sales and marketing assistant at Scioto Downs and as an area supervisor for The Hechinger Company/Home Quarters Inc. In the mid-'80s, Reed was an administrative assistant and special assistant to the manager of the Ohio State Fair. Reed said he values the agricultural importance of the fair and the overall "variety of excitement" it offers. "To me, the family fun atmosphere of the fair is what it's all about. It's a place and a time to relax and just have fun," he said. "The combination of harness racing and the fair is something very special that has a substantial impact on the local economy." After his introductory period with Lowe, Reed said he plans to develop short- and long-term plans for use of the fairgrounds for discussion with the fair board. |
