Four of harness racing's leading stakes sponsors, including
the Little
Brown Jug Society, have again created a $1,000,000 bonus for the
three-year-old pacer who wins four of the sport's most prestigious races in
2002.
The owner of a pacer that wins the Little Brown Jug
(Delaware, Ohio),
North America Cup (Woodbine, Ont.), Meadowlands Pace (Meadowlands, NJ) and
Breeders Crown (Woodbine, Ont.) will receive a $1,000,000 bonus.
The $650,000-estimated Little Brown Jug will be raced for
the 57th time
on Thursday afternoon, September 19 at the Delaware, Ohio County Fair. The
Delaware Grand Circuit meeting begins Saturday afternoon, September 14 and
continues through Thursday September 19.
In 2001, Bettor's Delight won the Little Brown Jug and
North America Cup,
while Real Desire scored in the other two Grand Slam events, the Meadowlands
Pace and Breeders Crown.
The Grand Slam of Pacing is sponsored by the Little Brown
Jug Society,
Hambletonian Society, Meadowlands Race Track and the Ontario Jockey Club.
The bonus policy is underwritten by Royal Surplus Lines
Insurance Company
and placed by Powell-Walton-Milward of Lexington, KY. It is the largest bonus
ever offered in the sport as a cash prize, and would be recorded as earnings
for the winning horse.
There is also a Grand Slam of Trotting bonus of $1,000,000
should a
three-year-old trotter sweep the Hambletonian, World Trotting Derby, Kentucky
Futurity and Breeders Crown.
Since 1984, the first year that all eight Grand Slam events
have been
raced, no pacer or trotter has won all four races in their respective
divisions.
