Mach Three, Allamerican Ingot And Three
Olives
Head Solid Group Of
Little Brown Jug Contenders
By Tom White
Delaware, Ohio--One year ago Real Desire and Bettor's Choice were ranked
one-two on the U.S. Trotting Association's preseason Experimental Ratings.
The two colts each won two of their division's most glamorous events.
Bettor's Delight took the $1,148,000 North America Cup and the $646,050
Little Brown Jug. Real Desire beat his arch rival in the $1,009,000
Meadowlands Pace and the $781,050 Breeders Crown.
Earlier this year Stan Bergstein, author of the
Experimental Ratings,
gave Western Shooter a "nose" edge over Mach Three in the 2002 ratings.
This
is the same margin that Western Scooter had beaten Mach Three in last
October's Breeders Crown. Bergstein also rated Louie Louie Too,
Allamerican
Ingot and Three Olives in his top five.
Then, in a span of four days,
everything changed. On March 27 Louie
Louie Too died on the track of a likely heart attack and on March 30
Western
Shooter was euthanized after the colt was afflicted with a severe case of
Toxemia.
Based on the Experimental Ratings, Mach Three,
Allamerican Ingot and
Three Olives appear to be the early leaders for the 57th renewal of the
$550,000-est. Little Brown Jug scheduled for Thursday afternoon, September
19
at the Delaware, Ohio County Fair.
The Jug is the second leg of Pacing's Triple
Crown along with the Cane
and Messenger and is one of four races that make up the $1,000,000 Grand
Slam
bonus. A pacer that wins the North America Cup (Woodbine), Meadowlands
Pace
(The Meadowlands), Little Brown Jug and their division of the Breeders
Crown
(Woodbine) will earn the $1,000,000 bonus.
A total of 180 three-year-olds
are eligible to the Little Brown Jug
including eight of the top 10 colts on the USTA Experimental Ratings. The
first important three-year-old engagements are the $300,000 Berry's Creek
eliminations on May 4 at The Meadowlands and the $165,000 Max Hempt
Memorial
on May 25 at Pocono Downs. However, elims for the $600,000 Prix de
Montreal
and the $500,000 New Jersey Classic, both on May 25, are usually the first
real tests of the division leaders and pretenders.
The Grand Slam begins with the North America Cup
(June 15 and June 22);
Meadowlands Pace (July 6 and July 13); Little Brown Jug (September 19) and
Breeders Crown (October 12 and October 19). The Cane Pace kicks off the
Triple Crown Series (August 24 and September 2), Little Brown Jug
(September
19) and Messenger Pace (October 26).
In early season action, Mach Three defeated seasoned
older pacers in
1:52.3 in his first start at Mohawk; Kilowatt won at The Meadowlands in
1:50.3; and Brad's Gold scored in 1:53.1 in the $61,400 Youthful Series
Final
at Mohawk.
