Red River Hanover, Million
Dollar Cam & Up Front Western
By Tom White
Delaware, Ohio--Little Brown Jug contenders Red River Hanover, Million
Dollar Cam and Up Front Western won $100,000 divisions of the Burlington
Stakes on Saturday at Woodbine Raceway near Toronto in the final preps for
the $1,000,000 North America Cup. Jug hopefuls did not fare as well in two
$111,100 divisions of the Cleveland Classic at Northfield Park.
Coming up this Saturday are the $35,000 North America Cup
eliminations at
Woodbine and the $150,000 Final of the New Jersey Sires Stakes at The
Meadowlands.
Million Dollar Cam, a Cam's Card Shark colt trained by Bill
Robinson and
driven by Randy Waples, won the first Burlington division in 1:50.3, a new
lifetime mark for the colt owned by Jeffrey Snyder of New York City.
Monsoon Hall finished second over Pacific Titan and All American Ingot.
Red River Hanover, probably the leading Jug candidate at
this time, won
the second division in 1:50.4 for Robinson-Waples. The victory was the colt's
fourth in six 2002 starts and came over Silver D Moon and Dragondotcom. The
Western Hanover colt is owned by the Lothiorien Stables of Mississauga,
Ontario and Snyder.
Another Western Hanover colt, Up Front Western, took the
third division
for driver Mario Baillargeon and trainer Mark Ford in 1:51.1, also his best
time ever. Owned by Ed Mullinax of Amherst, Ohio and Frank Dettore of
North
Ridgeville, Ohio, Up Front Western defeated Daylon Frontier, Camystic and
Three Olives.
In the first division of the Cleveland Classic, Henry Clay
improved upon
his Jug hopes with a strong second place finish to Star Role. Henry Clay, a
son of Jate Lobell piloted by trainer-driver Brian Pinske, dodged breaking
horses to finish a close second in 1:52. Beauty N The Best was third. In the
second division Michael's Western upset Western Maverick in 1:53.2 with
Arizona Liar third.
Prominent Jug colts Art's Advantage and Royal Mattjesty won
$50,000 New
Jersey Sires Stakes. Art's Advantage scored in 1:51.1 over Dr. Hanniball and
New York Matts. Royal Mattjesty won in 1:52.1 over Cori's Gold and Mystic
Art.
