Eight Pacers Remain Eligible For $1 Grand Slam Bonus By Tom White
Of the thousands of three-year-old pacing colts hitting the racetrack
this summer, only eight remain eligible to the $1 million Grand Slam of
Pacing, which got underway on June 15 with eliminations for the $1.5
million
($970,000 U.S.) Pepsi North America Cup at Woodbine Raceway.
The owner of the colt who wins all four Grand Slam
races, including the
$620,000-est. Little Brown Jug on September 19, will net an instant $1
million cash bonus.
The Grand Slam bonus is awarded for a sweep of the
North America Cup
(June 22), Meadowlands Pace (July 13), Little Brown Jug and Breeders Crown
(October 19). Payment will be made to the existing owner(s) at the time
the
horse wins the final Grand Slam event, the Breeders Crown at Woodbine on
October 19.
"It was always out intent to reward the existing owner of the horse when
it completes the Grand Slam," said Hambletonian Society President Tom
Charters.
Since the Little Brown Jug, raced at the Delaware, Ohio
County Fair,
allows no supplements, the only colts still eligible to the Grand Slam are
the seven who qualified in last weekend's North America Cup eliminations.
The eight colts who can still earn the Grand Slam bonus
are Brad's Gold,
Mach Three, Pacific Titan, Red River Hanover, Royal Mattjesty, Swingin
Away,
Three Olives and Up Front Western. Swingin Away, who finished third to
McArdle in his NA Cup elimination, is not eligible to the Meadowlands
Pace.
However, his owners can pay a supplemental fee four days prior to regular
entries, a fee of 15 percent of the final Meadowlands Pace purse.
McArdle, who won a Cup elimination, and Mini Me, who
was second to Red
River Hanover in his NC Cup elim, are not eligible to the Little Brown Jug
and the Jug allows no supplements.
