How Much Would You Pay For A Jug Contender?
By Tom White
Delaware, Ohio--How much would you pay for a Little Brown
Jug
contender? Last year's champion Bettor's Delight cost John Grant $65,000 as
a yearling at the 2000 Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg, Pa. Runnerup
Real Desire was really a bargain, costing just $16,000 at the same yearling
auction.
Red River Hanover, the early favorite to win the 2002 Jug
following his
1:48.4 stakes record win in last week's $1,500,000 Pepsi North America Cup,
cost Phyllis Campbell and Jeffrey Snyder $300,000 as a yearling.
Runnerup
Mach Three, who did not sell at public auction, recently was purchased for a
reported $2.1-million.
Including Bettor's Delight, the last five Little Brown Jug
winners have
been bargain basement bargains. Astreos was purchased while in foal for
$8,000, then later sold in a private sale; Blissful Hall was a $47,000
Tattersalls yearling; Shady Character cost $28,000 and Western Dreamer
$50,000 as yearlings at Kentucky Standardbred.
Following is a list of current Jug favorites and their
yearling prices.
