20 Colts To Contest Two Meadowlands Pace Eliminations
By Tom White
Two divisions of 10 colts each were drawn Tuesday for
Saturday's $50,000
Meadowlands Pace eliminations. The top five finishers in each elimination
will return for the $1,000,000 Meadowlands Pace on June 13 at The
Meadowlands
in New Jersey.
The Meadowlands Pace takes on added importance as the
second leg of the
$1,000,000 Grand Slam Bonus for three-year-old pacers. A pacer that wins
the
North America Cup, Meadowlands Pace, Little Brown Jug and Breeders Crown
will
earn the $1,000,000 bonus for his owner.
Only North America Cup winner Red River Hanover is still eligible for the
Grand Slam. The 57th Little Brown Jug will be raced September 19 at
Delaware,
Ohio and the Breeders Crown on October 19 at Woodbine Raceway in Ontario
complete the Slam.
Five Meadowlands Pace winners have gone on to win the
Little Brown Jug,
the last being Precious Bunny in 1991. The others were Beach Towel (1990),
Nihilator (1985), Ralph Hanover (1983) and Niatross (1980). Real Desire,
who
won last year's Meadowlands Pace, was runnerup to Bettor's Delight in the
Little Brown Jug.
