PORT'S TOP STAKE SPONSORS CONTINUE $1,000,000 GRAND SLAM PRIZE
For the third straight year, a group of harness racing's top stake sponsors have created a $1,000,000 bonus
for the pacer or trotter who wins four of the sport's elite races for three-year-olds in 2002.
Any pacer who can take the North America Cup (Woodbine Racetrack, Ont.), Meadowlands Pace (Meadowlands Racetrack, N.J.), Little Brown Jug (Delaware
County Fair, Ohio) and their Breeders Crown event (Meadowlands Racetrack, NJ) is also in for a $1,000,000 payday.
Should both a trotter and a pacer accomplish a Grand Slam in a single year, the connections of each would receive a $1 million prize. All races are at
one mile.
The Grand Slam of Trotting and the Grand Slam of Pacing is sponsored by the Hambletonian Society, Illinois Department of Agriculture, which operates the
DuQuoin State Fair, Little Brown Jug Society, Meadowlands Racetrack, Woodbine Entertainment Group and The Red Mile. The award would be paid by an insurance
policy provided by Royal Surplus Lines Insurance Company and placed by
Powell-Walton-Milward of Lexington, Ky. It is the largest bonus ever offered in the sport as a cash prize, and would be recorded as
earnings for the winning horse.
The announcement comes just prior to the February 15th deadline for stakes nominations and sustaining
payments, when owners must choose from hundreds of races on the stakes calendar. No horse has won the Grand Slam in the two
years it has been offered. In 2002, Canada's Trainer of the Year, Bill Robinson, won all of the four pacing Grand Slam events with four different pacers.
