Twenty-Nine Jug Eligibles In Action This Weekend
Including Allamerican Theory and Yankee Cruiser
By Tom White
9/4/03
Only once in 57 years have Little Brown Jug officials used the "30" rule to
limit the number of starters. In 1995, a total of 31 horses were entered but
only the 30 with the highest lifetime money winnings were allowed to start.
There were three 10-horse eliminations and Nick's Fantasy defeated Village
Connection in the second heat to capture the Jug trophy.
Many horsemen are forecasting upwards of 30 or more entries for this year's
race when owners pay their $6,000 entry fees on Saturday morning, September 13
in the log cabin racing office. The $600,000-est. Little Brown Jug will be
raced Thursday afternoon, September 18 at the Delaware, Ohio County Fairgrounds.
Twenty-nine Jug eligible three-year-olds will be in action on Saturday at
Mohawk Raceway in Ontario, Scioto Downs in Ohio, Pocono Downs in Pennsylvania,
and Freehold Raceway in New Jersey.
Twelve Jug eligibles will race in three eliminations of the $270,000 Simcoe
Stakes at Mohawk Raceway in Ontario. Among the favorites are Meadowlands Pace
winner Allamerican Theory and Oliver Wendell Holmes victor Quality Western.
Eight colts eligible to the 58th Little Brown Jug are included in three
divisions of the $225,000 Jug Preview at Scioto Downs. Jug hopefuls include Art's
Chip, Coastocoast Yankee, Dr. Drew, Allamerican Captor and Whatanartist.
North America Cup, American-National and Review Futurity champion Yankee
Cruiser heads a group of three Jug eligibles in the $60,000 New Jersey Sires
Stakes at Freehold. The field also includes stakes winner Radar Sign.
Finally, there are two Jug eligibles, stakes winners Quarter Carat and
Nvincbl Artist, racing in the $100,000 Pennsylvania Championship at Pocono Downs.
Allamerican Native, Armbro Animate, Dream Wave, General Challenge, No Pan
Intended and The Globe have all made their final Jug tuneups.
