Jug Draw
By Tom White
9/13/03
Post positions for the 58th
edition of the Little Brown Jug Pacing Classic were drawn today at the
Delaware County Fairgrounds. The Jug, which will feature a full field of
30 three-year-old pacing colts and geldings (for the third time in
history), will be raced for a purse of $605,050 next Thursday afternoon,
September 18.
Peter Pan Stables' No Pan Intended,
winner of the Cane Pace, the first leg of the Pacing Triple Crown, heads
up the ten horse second elimination. The bay son of Pacific Fella heads
into the Jug on a five race winning streak, including triumphs in the
$331,000 Cane Pace Final (1:533 at Freehold on September 1) and the
$273,983 Art Rooney Pace Final (placed first in 1:541 at Yonkers on July
26). For the season, No Pan Intended has nine wins and two seconds in 12
trips to the post, with earnings of $475,159. Trained by Ivan Sugg, he
will start from the three hole on Thursday with David Miller in the
sulky, and is the morning line favorite at 2-1.
Also in that tough second elimination is John Levy Limited and Mark
Scholes' Allamerican Theory, the richest three-year-old pacer in North
America this year with earnings of $745,487. His biggest triumph came in
the $1 million Meadowlands Pace Final, when he defeated Armbro Animate
by a length and a quarter in a time of 1:493. Trained by Des Tackoor,
the son of Jenna's Beach Boy comes into the Jug off a three length score
over Articulator in their Simcoe Stakes division at Mohawk. Allamerican
Theory will score from post six, with Mike Lachance up.
The 2-1 morning line
favorite in the opening Jug elimination is Arlene and Jules Siegel's
Whatanartist. The bay son of Real Artist is coming off an impressive
1:51 triumph in his $75,000 Jug Preview division at Scioto Downs. The
lifetime winner of $487,063 took his mark of 1:49 earlier this year in
capturing a Meadowlands Pace elimination. Whatanartist will start from
post position two, with Brian Sears scheduled to drive.
The 7-5 favorite in the
third and final elimination is Brian Pinske Stable Incorporated, Nick
Barbieri, and Pinske Stables' Yankee Cruiser. He has hit the board in
nine of his 12 starts this year, with earnings of $699,758. The
Artiscape sophomore set his mark of 1:493 with a narrow victory in the
$987,200 North America Cup Final. Yankee Cruiser was also victorious
this year in the $285,000 American-National Final and the $52,000 Review
Stake. Trained by Tim Pinske, Yankee Cruiser drew the three hole and
will have the driving services of Andy Miller.
Each elimination
carries a purse of $72,606. The top three finishers in each elimination
come back for the $326,727 second heat. If the winner of the second heat
is one of the three elimination winners the race is over and a Jug
champion has been crowned. If not, the three elimination winners and the
second heat winner come back for a four-horse race-off for a purse of
$60,505. The winner of the race-off then becomes the 2003 Little Brown
Jug winner. Here are the fields for the eliminations:
