Among Eligibles To 63rd Little Brown Jug
by Tom White
3/24/08
DELAWARE, OH--Undefeated two-year-old pacing champion Somebeachsomewhere is the early favorite to win the 63rd Little Brown Jug. The $600,000-est. Jug Classic will be raced
Thursday afternoon, September 18th at the Delaware, OH County Fairgrounds.
Breeders Crown champion and leading money winning two-year-old pacer Santanna Blue Chip is also among the 144 colts and geldings who are eligible to the Jug, second jewel in
Pacing’s Triple Crown.
Among the 144 Little Brown Jug eligibles are seven of the eight leading juvenile money winners of 2007. Also, the top eight three-year-old pacers listed on Stan Bergstein’s
44th annual Experimental Championship Ratings are eligible to the Little Brown Jug.
Somebeachsomewhere is owned by the Schooner Stables of Nova Scotia, a group of six people who purchased the colt for $40,000 at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale in 2006.
The son of Mach Three was unbeaten in nine starts, including three qualifying victories, and earned $773,296. He never raced outside of Canada. Among his wins was a World
Record 1:49.3 performance in the $950,000 Metro Pace Final at Mohawk Raceway. He is trained by Jean Arsenault and was driven in his six stakes victories by Paul MacDonnell.
Soomebeachsomewhere was named for Blake Shelton’s hit country song.
Santanna Blue Chip is from the first crop by Art Major and is owned by the father-son team of trainer Carl Jamieson and driver Jody Jamieson, assistant trainer Jeff Gillis and
the George Arthur Stable. Santanna Blue Chip won the $650,000 Breeders Crown by a nose over Sand Shooter and stablemate Robert’s Rage in a career best 1:51.3. Santanna
topped all two-year-old pacers in earnings with $931,223. Santanna Blue Chip also won the $760,968 Governor’s Cup Final over Robert’s Rage at Woodbine and finished second to
Somebeachsomewhere in the voting for “Two-Year-Old Colt Pacer of the Year.”
Another highly rated Jug eligible is Sand Shooter who won divisions of the International Stallion Stake and Bluegrass at Lexington’s Red Mile, captured the elimination of the
Breeders Crown and finished second to Santanna Blue Chip in the Final.
Dali, ranked No. 5 on the Experimental, won the Niatross, Woodrow Wilson and a division of the International Stallion Stake. Lis Deo, second in the Experimental Ratings, is a
half-brother to the older champion Lis Mara and showed his breeding with victories in the Review and the Nassagaweya. Don’t overlook Robert’s Rage, the son of Artsplace, who
won a division of the Champlain at Mohawk and finished second and third behind stablemate Santanna Blue Chip in the Governor’s Cup Final and Breeders Crown Final.
The Little Brown Jug is the second leg of Pacing’s Triple Crown. The first leg is the Cane Pace scheduled for September 1 at Freehold. If a horse wins the Cane Pace, but is
not eligible to the Jug, his owner(s) may pay a $45,000 supplemental starting fee. Yonkers Raceway will play host to the third leg, the Messenger Pace, on October 25.
